CES 2018 Trends: 5G is the Future
4G is so 2017. 5G is the future. Fifth generation wireless technology will be a main topic at this year’s CES, hosted in Las Vegas, NV. Imagine a world with even faster wireless speeds. 5G is expected to be the foundation for shaping many other trends including self-driving cars, the IoT (Internet of Things), virtual reality and more. Don’t go asking Verizon for 5G the day after CES ends. You can expect it to start hitting major markets in 2019 with expected full impact by 2023. But there's no need to get discouraged; 5G technology will be tested at the 2018 Winter Olympics and Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are already working on trials for faster wireless speed. Here's is what to expect from 5G:Technology that offers super-high speeds that are reliable and consistent, even indoors or in congested areas.5G can support a massive increase in connected devices. No more lag between when you send a request for a website or video and when the network responds. 5G will reduce that to 1 millisecond. That's 400 times faster than the blink of an eye.5G has the potential to change more than just your smartphone. It can change the way doctors operate with remote surgery. Self driving cars can be fully responsive to 5G. You can have more precise control of drones, and 5G may even enhance virtual reality experiences. Looking towards the future, 5G sounds promising. Stay up to date with CES 2018 to learn the latest on the future of 5G. And come back to RAVV.com to keep up with the CES trends we're looking forward to seeing in 2018.
CES 2018 Trends: Ride a Self-Driving Lyft
With self-driving and smart cars becoming more prevalent, Lyft has partnered with Aptiv to offer passengers a ride in robot taxis at CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Aptiv, a self-driving technology company, and Lyft will offer people rides in these self-driving cars with the help of a safety driver behind the wheel. These cars will only travel to a select 20 preprogrammed locations, however, limiting destination points for passengers. Self-driving cars are a popular topic at CES and up until this point, demonstrations mainly took place in closed, contained parking lots. Lyft and Aptiv are taking a bold risk in demonstrating their technology on public roads, bringing pedestrians, passengers, and other drivers into the experience. Smart vehicles will pick up passengers at the Gold Lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9th-12th. These eight smart BMW 5 Series sedans will be available to passengers, who must sit through a brief lecture regarding the importance of automated driving at the beginning of their drive. Aptiv aims to teach people about the positive impact that self-driving cars have on the community. Despite the car being self-automated, a safety driver will sit behind the wheel in case the car comes across a situation it is not equipped to handle. An "in car host" will also tell riders about the features of the car. Beyond Lyft and Aptiv, the city of Las Vegas is also operating a fleet of self-driving shuttles, available for CES attendees to ride. Keolis and Navya, the two companies in charge of the shuttles, will also deploy a fleet of self-driving taxis for those attending the tech conference. Vine Might Make a Comeback and the World is Ready For It
The popular social media app was shut down in 2016, but co-founder Dom Hofmann hinted on Twitter that a follow-up app may be launching sometime in the near future.Vine was a social media platform that let users post six-second videos. The app gave birth to so many important moments, memes, inside jokes, and stories that users from all over the world captured. Whether it be scripted comedy skits or candid moments that someone was blessed to capture on camera, Vine gave a 6-second spotlight to the new generation of comedy and they did not disappoint. The social media platform was owned by Twitter before it was shut down last year. But on Dec. 6, co-founder Dom Hofmann tweeted this cryptic image which sent the Twitterverse into a frenzy: The image appeared a few days after Hofmann tweeted about his efforts in creating a follow-up app to the currently defunct Vine. He decided to create a follow-up after receiving a significant amount of “tweets, dms, etc” from the Twitter community expressing resentment about the app's shutdown. Well hopefully our dreams have come true. “V2”, as Hofmann called it, is as mysterious as it is exciting. We're still pretty salty about the first shut-down, but who isn't excited about Vine's resurgence Although details are scarce, hopefully V2 is reminiscient of the app we all know and love. Come back for more updates and details, or check out Hofmann's twitter for future V2 announcements. Photo by @domhof and found on Twitter

Snapchat's Latest Update Changes Everything
Snapchat is separating the social from the media with their latest round of updates. The new Snapchat is an attempt to personalize the app by separating your friends’ content from content produced by professional publishers and creators. The company released a statement on Nov. 29 with all the details about the app’s upcoming changes and the intentions behind revamping the Snapchat we all know and love. Founder and CEO, Evan Spiegel, explained the changes via a video that accompanied the statement.Spiegel admits that the company receives complaints about how the app mixes content from friends with content from various media publishers on the app. “Friends are relationships, not content,” says Spiegel, agreeing with the criticism that the social networking app receives. To respond to those complaints, Snapchat created this new update to refocus the app’s layout to prioritize your friends’ stories.Previously, the app’s home screen opened your smartphone’s camera, the left page contained the conversations between you and your friends, and the right page held all the stories from both your friends and various media outlets. The new Snapchat, however, will place all your friends’ stories on the left page and all media content solely on the right page. But wait, there’s more! The Friends page will feature a “Best Friends” algorithm that will prioritize the friends you chat with the most. The Discover page will also be personalized over time. Your subscriptions will be placed at the top, followed by the content that the algorithm thinks you’ll appreciate. The new Snapchat is all about you. Whether you're an avid user or not, this new update personalizes the app for a Snapchat experience that is unique to everyone's personal preferences. The update will be available to download from the app store in the upcoming days. Get to snapping! Photos by TechCrunch and TechSpot
